ON PREMISE CLEANING AND COLOR RESTORATION
You do not clean a fur coat just because it gets dirty. The number one concern with fur material is that the natural oils in the pelts will dry out. Once this happens the pelts become so brittle or tender that they will tear with incredible ease, rendering the garment useless.
If you feel a fur and then rub your fingers you should be able to feel a very slight oiliness. This is normal. Dust, pollutants, and airborne particulates are attracted to this and get caught in the hairs of the fur. They then act as a sponge drawing the natural oils out of the pelts.
These particles also have an abrasive effect on the hairs of the fur that can wear on the natural shine of the fur over time, causing it to look old and tired. When you clean a fur your primary goal is to remove these materials from the hairs. For this reason,
when an expert furrier recommends cleaning your fur yearly, he/she is doing so in your best interest.
ON PREMISE COLD STORAGE
Store your fur garments in cold storage when you are done wearing it for the season or not using it. This is one of the most important steps you can take in preserving your furs. Whenever it is warm enough outside to be done wearing a fur coat for the season is when you should put it in storage.
By the same token, when it is cold enough to justify wearing a fur (depending on your furs individual level of warmth) bring it home from storage. (Usually when it is cold enough to wear a winter jacket, it is time to put on your mink coat). The more time a fur is in cold storage,
the longer it will last. Professional Cold Storage facilities Humidity level is important when a fur will be hanging in one place for a significant amount of time. If the humidity is too low (dry air) the natural oils in the pelts will evaporate more rapidly causing the garment to become dry and deteriorate. If the humidity
is too high (damp air) they pelts can rot at a fast rate.
REPAIRS AND ALTERATIONS
Have rips, loose seams and damage repaired as soon as possible by a professional furrier. This prevents minor problems from becoming major, more expensive problems. Repairing fur garments is not like mending cloth. Repairs made from the outside will be weak and susceptible to more damage. For proper repairs the coat must be opened
and the sewing must be done from “inside”, under the lining. Specialized equipment including special needles and thread types specifically designed for the unique properties of fur, must be used.
Regular needles and thread will not be strong enough for fur. Most tailors, seamstresses or sewing hobbyists do not have this special equipment and are not versed in the proper
methods for cutting and sewing fur. For lasting repairs a garment should be taken to a professional furrier.
